Meeting in private between the prime ministers of Pakistan and Iraq on the fringes of the 79th UNGA

Today, during the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif had a meeting with Prime Minister of Iraq, H.E. Mr. Mohammad Shia’ Al Sudani.

The Prime Minister praised the friendly relations that are bolstered by deep historical, cultural, and religious links between the two friendly nations. The prime minister also expressed gratitude for the superb accommodations the Iraqi government had made for the Pakistani Zaireen.

The presidents of the two countries decided to expand and enhance their current bilateral relations during their meeting. They choose to take advantage of the possibility for improving mutually beneficial collaboration that existed between the two nations.

The two leaders also discussed topics of mutual interest that were regional and global in nature. The continuous Israeli slaughter in Gaza and the resulting humanitarian crisis were seen by both presidents with deep concern. Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister, reaffirmed Pakistan’s demand for an early end to hostilities in Gaza and accountability of Israel for the slaughter in Gaza.

The leaders’ decision to support international efforts at the UN and OIC platforms for a quick ceasefire in Gaza and the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to their Palestinian counterparts highlights their shared perspectives on global challenges.
