Senior citizens and female inmates in Punjab are set to receive reduced sentences and early discharges. These measures’ summaries are now prepared and will be approved before Eid-ul-Azha by the provincial government.

Both male and female inmates who have served two-thirds of their sentences and who are above 70 years of age would be eligible for release under the proposed plan. Furthermore, this project will help women in jail who have completed two-thirds of their sentences and have children under the age of five.

Prisoners must exhibit good behavior throughout their incarceration and serve out two thirds of their sentences in order for sentences to be reduced and early release to occur, Punjab Home Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal said.

When Home Secretary Mengal and Prisons Inspector General Mian Farooq Nazir visited Lahore Central Jail, they brought attention to these measures. Upon meeting with the inmates, both officers evaluated the facilities that were made available to them.
