A couple from New Zealand, who contested in the Guinness World Records for having dug the biggest potato in the world, has now confirmed that it was not a potato at all, Sky News reported.

Colin Craig-Brown and his wife Donna found this astonishing tuber last August while they were gardening on their farm near Hamilton in New Zealand.

They submitted multiple photos and went through a lot of paperwork to enter their discovery in the Guinness World Records. The scientific test results, however, turned out negative, crushing the couple’s hopes.

The email said: “Sadly, the specimen is not a potato and is in fact the tuber – a type of gourd. For this reason, we do unfortunately have to disqualify the application.”

The couple named the tuber ‘Dug’.

Dug become a celebrity after being found. The couple posted funny photos on Facebook. At 7.8kg, had Dug been a potato, it would beat previous records.

Even though the couple was disappointed, they say they are still very fond of Dug, despite the tuber not making the plate. It still lives in their freezer. They say they are still committed to growing the biggest potato in the world.
