Resistance leaders ask people to protest after Friday prayers

The leadership said the state authorities have waged a war against civilians and appealed to the youth to maintain discipline and order during resistance against “state sponsored terrorism.”

Strongly condemning the use of force on civilians in Shopian district during an anti-militancy operation, resistance leaders Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik on Thursday urged people to protest against “state terrorism” after Friday prayers.

“We express deep concern over increasing use of repressive measures from forces against civilians, students and continuous detention of pro-freedom activists,” said a joint statement issued by the trio.

The leadership said the state authorities have waged a war against civilians and appealed to the youth to maintain discipline and order during resistance against “state sponsored terrorism.”

Demanding immediate release of detained students and political workers, the leadership said, “The authorities are harsh towards students and it would further deteriorate the already charged situation.”

“It is a matter of grave concern that police and forces through brutal actions are annoying students and it has badly affected their future,” the statement reads.

The leaders condemned the use of “brute forces” on civilians in dozens of villages in Shopian district.

“Forces are laying siege around villages and during crackdown people have been thrashed and properties ransacked. People are showered with bullets and pellets when they show resentment,” the statement said.

The leaders demanded immediate release of all political activists and leaders arrested during the uprising last year and said their detention period is being prolonged on one pretext or the other.

“No rule of law exists and state is virtually reeling under martial law. Delhi should accept defeat as they have lost their credibility and legitimacy and added that authorities through excessive force and military might are continuing forced occupation,” they said.

“No accountability exists on ground as forces have been vested with unbridled powers to harass people.”
