‘PTI to form grand alliance to demand PM’s resignation’

LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has decided that it will not let the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) work until Premier Nawaz Sharif steps down from office.

In order to build pressure, the PTI has also decided to form a “grand alliance” of all opposition parties to demand that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif step down from office so that the JIT could investigate him and his family members without pressure.

PTI Punjab parliamentary party head and opposition leader in Punjab Assembly Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed will meet the PPP, PML-Q and Jamaat-i-Islami parliamentary leaders ahead of the assembly session on Monday to chalk out further strategy.

Speaking to the media at Punjab Assembly on Friday, Mr Rasheed said heads of all major political parties had already demanded that the prime minister resign. In order to press for the demand, he stressed that all political parties needed to chalk out a strategy.

The opposition leader said the PTI had accepted the court’s judgement in Panamagate but questioned how subordinate officers could investigate a sitting prime minister.

He said the PTI and other opposition parties would table joint resolutions regarding the prime minister’s resignation.

Earlier in the day, the opposition leader submitted a resolution in the Punjab Assembly demanding the prime minister’s resignation. In his resolution, Mr Rasheed said two out five judges in the Panama Papers case judgement declared that the premier was no more “sadiq and ameen”.

He stated that the prime minister should resign from office till the Supreme Court’s judgement on the proposed 10-point JIT report.
