FM Qureshi, EU security representative discuss situation in Ukraine
  • During meeting, views were exchanged on Emergency Session of United Nations General Assembly.
  • Qureshi says that PM regretted situation and had shared Pakistan’s hope that diplomacy could avert military conflict. 
  • Borrell acknowledges importance of continued efforts for finding a diplomatic solution.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Thursday held a telephonic conversation with Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and discussed the current situation in Ukraine.

During the conversation, views were exchanged on the emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly, a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said.

Recalling Prime Minister Imran Khan’s views regarding the latest situation between Russia and Ukraine, Qureshi said that the premier regretted the situation and had shared Pakistan’s hope that diplomacy could avert military conflict. 

Underscoring the adverse effects of conflict on developing countries, the minister said that the PM has been stressing the importance of diplomatic solutions.

While expressing deep concern at the recent turn of events, Qureshi apprised Borrell of Pakistan’s principled position, which is anchored in the promotion of peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy. 

He emphasised that Pakistan has consistently stressed the need for de-escalation, renewed negotiations, sustained dialogue, and continuous diplomacy. He stressed the importance of a solution in accordance with relevant multilateral agreements, international law, and principles of the UN Charter.

Borrell shared his perspective on the situation and highlighted its impact on international peace and security as well as the global economy. He acknowledged the importance of continued efforts for finding a diplomatic solution.

Neither the constitutional amendment nor the extension of the Chief Justice have the necessary number of votes. As a constitutional modification is the purview of Parliament, we ought to have done it if we had the necessary numbers.

It’s evident that CJP Qazi Faez Isa won’t take no for an answer. He said it would be acceptable to extend the age limit for everyone when he discussed this with the Attorney General and the Law Minister.

Rana Sanaullah stated that in terms of politics, they are working with Maulana Fazlur Rehman rather than supporting him.

Regarding his role in appointing the Army Chief and obtaining desired posts, Lt. Gen. (retired) Faiz Hameed has been accused. Furthermore, he is charged with utilizing PTI for these objectives. He could not have acted alone if these charges are true, according to Sanaullah; the PTI founder would have also been involved.

“WhatsApp conversations between the two on May 9th may surface after retirement, and individuals who helped them communicate may later speak out,” the statement reads.

“Former COAS Qamar Javed Bajwa never asked for an extension in our presence,” Rana Sanaullah stated in response to a query posed during the interview. It was never mentioned by Shehbaz Sharif that the former COAS had requested a delay.

In addition, he refuted reports that Ijaz Amjad, the father-in-law of Qamar Javed Bajwa, and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif met in London.
