To earn this award over the last five years, Punjab University has outperformed universities in China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore. Dr. Khalid Mehmood made a point.

Last year, the university was ranked among the top 740–750 institutions; this year, it is ranked 570th globally, a notable rise of 170 ranks. Dr Khalid Mehmood highlighted the commitment of the Punjab University Ranking Committee and said that the university’s staff, administration, and students worked tirelessly to achieve this feat.

In line with its dedication to both career development and academic success, Punjab University has also secured the top rank in Pakistan for graduate employment. The ranking committee chairman, Dr. Usman Awan, underlined the necessity of ongoing government support to raise the caliber of education at Pakistan’s institutions by providing sufficient money.

Punjab University is now the most improved university in Asia over the past five years, according to the QS World University Rankings. This is an exciting development for both the university and Pakistan as a whole.

Officials from the Pakistan Embassy, Mr. Bilal Akram Shah and Mr. Bilal Riaz, accepted the esteemed award on behalf of PU during the EduData Summit, which was hosted in Washington, DC and was organized by the QS World University Rankings. At a press event on Wednesday at the University Club in this city, PU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood, PU Ranking Committee Chairman Dr. Usman Awan, and Secretary Dr. Shafiqur Rahman discussed this historic and unparalleled accomplishment.

Dr. Mahmood told the media that PU was on par with all institutions in Asia, including those in South Korea, China, Japan, Singapore, and India, which are all major Asian economies. Even though PU has won the title of “Best Improved Institution – Asia region award” for the past five years, he claimed that the budgets of these universities are vastly different from PU’s. He noted that the QS team had recently ranked 1,503 higher education institutions based on an analysis of the standing and research output of 5663 schools.

In the most recent QS World University Ranking, he claimed, PU jumped an astonishing 170 spots to be listed at 570. The PU rating was between 740 and 750 the previous year and between 800-1000 between 2019 and 2022. For this outstanding achievement, Dr. Mahmood praised the teachers, staff, and students.

According to him, Pakistan’s higher education system may undergo changes as a result of this revelation. According to him, this news has stoked optimism that, despite having little funding, any university may succeed on the international scene with perseverance and commitment. He gave an overview of all the actions the PU Ranking Committee has performed over the previous six years.

He mentioned that 14 Pakistani higher education institutes were ranked this year. He stated that PU is the top university in Pakistan according to the “Employment Outcomes” metric. He continued, “This indicator shows the university’s ability to guarantee a high level of employability for their graduates while also nurturing future leaders who go on to make an impact in their respective fields.”

The usage of Scopus indexed publication data from the previous five years in the most recent ranking is noteworthy. According to the VC, 8637 works that are indexed in Scopus and have a PU association have been published over this time. He stated that the last six years’ worth of data were utilized to calculate citations, and that 85,554 normalized citations from PU research projects were included. Dr. Mahmood stated that PU ranked 118 globally in the Employment Outcome indicator, 162 globally in the Employment Reputation indicator, and 566 globally in the Academic Reputation indicator. The vice chancellor expressed her gratitude to Prof. Dr. Muhammad Usman Awan and the other young professors on the University Ranking committee for their outstanding work.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Usman Awan, the Chairman of the Ranking Committee, stated that this success has been attributed to a number of factors, including the satisfaction of eminent academics and employers, the steady rise in Scopus-indexed research publications and citations, student learning, global engagement, and sustainability. The speaker highlighted several factors that could potentially elevate the University of the Punjab’s ranking in the future years, including improvements in the faculty-student ratio, an increase in the number of international faculty and students, an increase in co-authored papers with international academics, and research on socioeconomic issues in Pakistan. He asserted that PU might rank among the top 300 universities in the world in the next four years provided the government gives it a sizable financial boost in the upcoming years.
